These are clearly anglicised
names. Simon's Hebrew name was Simcha ben Natta, and he named his
youngest son Nathan, clearly after his father. On Simon's marriage
certificate in Radom in 1871, his parents' names are given as Nuta and
Chaja. |

Simon gives completely false ages
for his children here! In reality, in July 1894, "Harris" was 9 years
old, Morris was 18 months old and Louis would not be born until the
October of that year! Simon also omits to
mention his other children, who would have also been living at 9 Merrion
Street in 1894: Joseph (aged about 18), Leah (about 16), Gerty (about
12) and Sam (about 5). Perhaps Simon's reason for lying about his
children's ages is connected to his fabrication of Morris' and Louis'
existence on the 1891 census. |
Simon's Certificate of
Naturalisation was granted on 1 January 1895, and he made his mark on
the Oath of Allegiance on 9 January.
