CHAIM TEMPELCHOF, MILLIE WOOLFSON AND FAMILY

Photo 01-10-01

Hymie Templehoff (né Chaim Tempelchof) and Millie Woolfson on their wedding day

London, 1908

Chaim was born in Konstantynow Lodzki in 1881, though his parents moved  to Lodz shortly afterwards. He and his siblings came to London in the first few years of the 20th century. He died there in 1966. Millie is believed to have

been born in Vitebsk, and also came to London around the same time as Chaim. She died there in 1961.

Russia or Manchuria, c.1905

This official Russian Army photograph is believed to be associated with the Battle of Mukden (1905), which was the last major land battle of the Russo-Japanese War. A concise and informative article about the battle can be read at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Mukden. Chaim was one of approximately 40,000 Russian troops taken prisoner by the victorious Japanese. He and those in his camp were treated well during their confinement, and awoke one morning to find the prison camp deserted, the guards having vanished. They walked free, literally!

It is believed that Chaim had already moved to London, but returned to Russia to fight in the Russo-Japanese conflict, although this has yet to be confirmed. It is not known which regiment of the Russian Army Chaim was attached to, what medal he and his friends are displaying in this photo or why they received it.
